Abandoned pint-sized puppy chases cop down the street and ‘begs’ to be adopted
If you’re dog owner, you already know how caring for a pet is very different from owning a toy that you can chuck at a moment’s notice.
Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened to Hobart, the adorable pint-sized pup in this story. The tiny pup was aimlessly wandering the streets of Los Angeles, all alone and with no one to take care of him, when he spotted two policemen.
He was seemingly awestruck by the officers — so he did what all curious pups do, stumbling towards them on his tiny feet.
Officers Mercado and Tavera are two devoted police officers of LAPD’s Hollywood Division. The two were patrolling the streets of LA one day when they stumbled upon an adorable tiny puppy on Hobart boulevard. The little critter sensed that the officers could help him, and desperately tried to grab the two’s attention.
He trotted after them, whimpering adorably. Officer Mercado, who couldn’t resist the sweet little critter, instantly scooped him up and took him to his police car. He was clearly desperate for someone to love and protect him, and far too young to care for himself.
The officers picked the pup up and brought him back with them to the station. In the car ride over, the puppy was cuddled up in the lap of Officer Tavera, and he could not stop staring with adoration at his rescuers.
The kindhearted officers decided to name the pup Hobart, a name after the street he was found on, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life. In order to be sure that they didn’t accidentally adopt someone else’s dog, they did some background investigation and found that the puppy’s owner couldn’t care for him anymore.
This one was incredibly small, and no way would it be able to survive on its own in these streets. He needed to find a new home or be kept in a shelter for a while, hoping to be adopted.
Officer Mercado’s original plan was to drop him off at a shelter. But that changed very soon afterward. The overwhelming response from people on social media eventually convinced Mercado to adopt the little pup. Hobart was brought to the police station where he was given an honorary K-9 title. Everyone at the station fell in love with the teensy pup, and Hobart loved all the attention.
But at the end of the day, he had his sights set on one special person: Mercado.
And luckily for Hobart, Mercado decided to make him the happiest little puppy in the world and adopted him.
You might have heard the phrase “Adopt don’t shop” echoed countless times in the past, and it should be echoed even more. Dogs are living beings that need food, shelter, and love. They are not fashion accessories but companions for life.
We can all take a lesson from Hobart and adopt a dog if we are in a position to. They may only be part of your life, but to them, you are their entire life.
